Singing Tip Light Bulb

We know our Mothers have been telling us to sit up straight for a long time.  And when it comes to effective singing, they’re absolutely right.  Here are a couple of points on posture to set you straight (pun intended):

  1. Keep your back straight, chest open, and shoulders relaxed and down.  This helps you stay relaxed, ensures that you are taking smooth, controlled breaths using your diaphragm (belly), and allows air to move freely from your lungs to your vocal cords.
  2. Don’t raise or lower your head while singing.  We know it can be hard to not do this—especially when expressing emotion–but consider that raising or lowering your head (i.e. raising or dropping your chin) makes it more difficult to keep the larynx (Adam’s apple) stable.  Instead, try to maintain a relaxed, neutral head position.

Try to make good posture a habit all the time when you are singing (and even when you’re not). Let us know if you find this helpful or have anything to add.
