Humming is a great way for developing vocal coordination–that is, getting the right amount of air flowing with the right amount of vocal cord tension to produce a clear tone. It also helps you focus on the resonant spaces in your chest, throat, and head (which can feel funky if you haven’t really noticed it before). It’s also a great way to warm up.

So first things first. When you hum, start by placing the tip of your tongue behind your bottom teeth. And be sure to leave it there. As you hum, play with the amount air you use as you go up in pitch. With some practice, you’ll notice that it’s easier to produce a good tone on the high notes with less air. Be sure to keep your mouth, tongue, and neck very relaxed.

So what should you hum? Anything, really. But if you are practicing scales or intervals, then humming is a great way to work through those to help remove the areas where your voice may be breaking. If you’re not working through scales or intervals, then hum through any songs you are learning.

If you notice your voice tensing up as you approach high notes (yes, it can happen even with humming), concentrate on staying relaxed and using less air. It’s okay if the tone isn’t clear at first. You need to unlearn the habit of tensing up first, before you can develop a clear tone. If you’re still having difficulty, use the technique of bending forward on higher notes to help.

For warming up, humming can be an alternative to lip trills/flapping lips (see using lip trills to a song) when it’s difficult (or maybe a little weird) to stand there with your fingers in your cheeks puckered up like a lazy fish. We often hum when driving or just walking around doing chores, etc.

Give it a shot and let us know if it’s helpful.

It’s a pretty well-known fact that athletes warm up prior to any event or performance. As an example, a runner will do some light jogging, a tennis player will easily volley, and a dancer will stretch. Warming up readies the body for what’s next and reduces the possibility of injury. For a singer, using a vocal warm up routine is just as essential.

Unfortunately, many singers–especially those just learning how to sing–sing without warming up properly. It’s easy to just start singing (like along with a song on the radio or with karaoke or RockBand), but if the singer is committed to getting better, then remembering to warm up before singing goes a long way. Effective vocal warm up routines don’t take long, reduce the chance of injury, and have the following benefits:

During a proper vocal warm up, the amount of air passing the vocal folds begins small and gradually increases –thus preventing too much air from being forced through the vocal folds (which can result in irritation).

The outer muscles of larynx become relaxed and loose. This helps prevent them from taking the larynx out of a stable position when the singer actual starts “singing”.

The singer becomes accustomed to how her voice is feeling that particular day and can then adjust the amount of warm up time required to have everything “working properly”.

It mentally prepares her for the upcoming performance or practice session.

So when should a singer warm up? Every time she practices or performs–no exceptions. Failing to work through a vocal warm up routine will seriously inhibit progress when learning how to sing better and could lead to injury.

Some of the most common and effective vocal warm ups include humming and lip trills (also called “bubbling” or “flapping lips”). Check out the video below for some advice (and a little demonstration of a lip trill) from Brett Manning, creator of Singing Success, an outstanding vocal program based on the speech level singing technique.

Learning to sing and play guitar at the same time can be like learning to rub your stomach while patting your head. It might be difficult and frustrating at first, but with these tips and some practice, you’ll develop the right coordination in little time.

First, there’s no easy trick to playing and singing at the same time. When I first started to play and sing at the same time, it sounded like a trainwreck. I’ve since been able to improve to the point where my performances are “fluid”, I capture the essence of the song, and I’m free to really express myself. Although it took quite a bit of trial and error (plus patience) to get to this point, it has become a very rewarding experience.

While learning, I discovered the following “tricks” that could be used as “stepping stones” while developing my singing/playing coordination. By using them, you should hopefully be able to cut down on the learning curve.

Start With a Simple Rhythm: Use a simple rhythm like one strum per every beat while singing. Tapping your foot to the rhythm (which is a good habit to develop anyhow) will help. So will a metronome. Yes, the song may sound boring and predictable, but once the overall rhythm is consistent, you can begin adding variations.

Alternate Strumming and Singing: This is a great way to begin combining chords and vocals together. Essentially, you play a chord once, then sing the melody/lyrics that occur during that chord, then play the next chord, and so on. Alternating back an forth helps develop the timing and coordination. As you improve, add additional strums so that the singing starts to overlap the strumming.

Make the Harmony Automatic: Practice a song without singing several times until it is memorized and mostly automatic. This frees up brain cells to concentrate on singing.

Play Along: Learn covers of other’s songs and play along with the CD/mp3, etc. It’s like a set of training wheels for rhythm and timing.

Sing Gibberish: Try singing the melody with whatever words, sounds, or syllables you come up with. Even humming can help here. It acts like a small stepping stone to singing with the actual lyrics (which takes a bit more coordination).

Record Yourself: Recording your practice allows for critical listening and helps you identify areas of the performance that need improvement. Plus, it’s a great way to track your progress and see how far you’ve come over time. Just don’t be too hard on yourself if things don’t sound perfect. It’s all part of the journey.

Again, there’s no shortcut to learning to sing and play guitar at the same time. However, with patience, practice, and by using these stepping stones, you will be well on your way to making it automatic and enjoying more freedom to express yourself.

There are definitely a lot of vocal technique books out there that can help you learn how to sing better. We haven’t had the opportunity to purchase or review them all in our own practice, however, there are a few that have made a difference and some that look very promising. The intention of this post is to list a few of the vocal technique books we believe are worthy and practical.

If you’ve become comfortable bending forward on high notes as part of your practice, this simple singing tip can also help with hitting high notes (and let you remain upright to avoid funny looks during a performance ).

As you approach higher notes, you may begin to notice that things are beginning to tense up in your throat and it requires you to strain, force more air out, and maybe even sing louder.

An easy way to relieve this tension is to lower your jaw a bit on high notes. Try to feel the back of your chin relax and open up a bit. This not only relieves the tension, but also provides more room for air to pass and creates a larger space for the sound to reverberate within your head. As a rule of thumb, the less straining and struggle you feel as you go from low notes to high notes, the better.

It’s definitely a simple singing tip that can make a huge difference.

Be sure to let us know (by leaving a comment) if this tip is any help.

We know our Mothers have been telling us to sit up straight for a long time. And when it comes to effective singing, they’re absolutely right. Here are a couple of points on posture to set you straight (pun intended):

Keep your back straight, chest open, and shoulders relaxed and down. This helps you stay relaxed, ensures that you are taking smooth, controlled breaths using your diaphragm (belly), and allows air to move freely from your lungs to your vocal cords.

Don’t raise or lower your head while singing. We know it can be hard to not do this—especially when expressing emotion–but consider that raising or lowering your head (i.e. raising or dropping your chin) makes it more difficult to keep the larynx (Adam’s apple) stable. Instead, try to maintain a relaxed, neutral head position.

Try to make good posture a habit all the time when you are singing (and even when you’re not). Let us know if you find this helpful or have anything to add.

Each singer is unique, however, there is generally a set of ranges for male singers and another for female singers. These different vocal ranges are not set in stone so to speak (or to sing for that matter ); however, the following should be a good reference for the basics (A few notes: these approximations are based on several sources and experience; you will undoubtedly find differences depending on where you look. Also, there are other “lesser-known” distinctions in between [e.g. bass-baritone], but the following are the key ones). We’ve given the ranges using the scientific name for the lower and upper notes of the range. For an easy way to find out where these notes are on a piano: see the piano key frequencies chart.

Female Vocal Ranges

First, let’s look at the traditional estimated ranges of the female vocal range. We say “traditional” because these ranges are usually referred to as alto, mezzo-soprano, and soprano (alto is the lowest and soprano the highest). We say “estimated” because some singers can go beyond these ranges with proper technique. Here’s the breakdown:

Alto: E3 to F5

Mezzo-soprano: G3 to C6

Soprano: G3 to E6

Male Vocal Ranges

For guys, the different vocal ranges are bass, baritone, and tenor. Here’s the approximate note ranges:

Bass: F2 to G4

Baritone: A2 to B4

Tenor: C3 to E5

Being aware of what vocal range you’re in can be a help, but don’t let it be a hindrance by thinking that you have to stay within an exact range. It’s a better use of your time to determine where your passage areas are so you can concentrate on finding ways to keep your tone connected when moving through them.

This is another simple singing tip in the “tips on how to sing” series, but we think it is very important and a good habit to develop. As we mentioned in the article Breathing Techniques For Singing, try to breathe through your nose on the inhale.

The reason for this is simple: breathing through your mouth can dry out the mouth and throat. The vocal cords operate more effectively when they and the surrounding area are lubricated. (This is pretty obvious to us when we try to sing early in the morning and we’re still a bit dehydrated from the night’s sleep).

Also, breathing in through your nose helps maintain and even and relaxed breathing rhythm–essential for getting the amount of air passing through the vocal cords just right and thereby producing a good, consistent tone.

It’s not always easy to breathe through your nose when singing–especially when first learning. Try to develop the habit of breathing in through your nose when warming up, doing lip trills, and humming.

Singing For The Stars is one of the best vocal technique books we have. We often refer back to it when brushing up our skills or giving singing advice to our friends. Singing For The Stars consists of a book (about 100 pages) and two CD’s. The first part of the book covers the basics of the Speech Level Singing Method and the second part acts as a workbook for working through the 30 exercises contained on the CDs.

Singing For The Stars was created by Seth Riggs–the founder of the Speech Level Singing Method and vocal coach for many famous singers including Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Bette Midler

The program provided in Singing For The Stars is powerful, but, like any method, takes time to work through. The exercises aren’t always easy, but if you stick with them, you’ll suddenly find yourself staying connected through your passages and having much better control. There are other books and programs available today that, from our perspective, approach singing instruction from the Speech Level Singing mindset. Some of the other methods may be more suitable to your learning style (for example, online singing lessons or video-based lessons), but if an old-fashioned workbook and solid exercises on CD (not to mention an affordable price) work for you, then definitely check it out over at Amazon.

The second tip in the tips on how to sing series is rather simple but can be very effective when you’re having trouble hitting higher notes.

When singing higher notes, there is often a tendency for singers to strain or sing louder. This is caused by the outside muscles of the larynx (voice box) trying to help the vocal cords do their job. The problem is that the vocal cords are designed to produce the high notes on their own without any extra help from these outside muscles. (These outside muscles are designed for swallowing, not singing).

An indication that the outside muscles of the larynx are helping is that the larynx begins to rise up. If you watch the front of your larynx–the “bump” in the front of your throat often called the Adam’s Apple–in a mirror or place your finger on it while singing higher notes, you’ll see this in action.

The key to keeping these muscles from interfering is to concentrate on keeping the larynx relaxed and stable. That is, keeping the larynx in the same position as when you are speaking normally.

A great way to learn how to keep the larynx stable on high notes is to bend slightly forward. As the notes go up, you go forward and down (just be careful not to bang your head on anything ).

This tip is best used when practicing scales or warming up. Over time, you will need to bend forward less and less as your mind begins to think “stable” or “relaxed” when hitting higher notes. It’s all about developing coordination and learning “to let go” of the tension around your larynx.

We hope this tip helps. It’s something that you can always come back to if you “get stuck” trying to hit high notes. Be sure to let us know (via the comments) what kind of success you have with it.

Learning how to sing with vibrato will add richness to your voice when properly executed and used in the right places. Here we’ll discuss what vibrato is and offer an exercise to help you develop it.

So first, what is vibrato?

Essentially, vibrato is a slight variation of pitch around a particular note. The pitch oscillates between slightly higher and lower than the note being sung. Not only does this oscillation add warmth to your tone, but it has the effect of keeping long notes (e.g. notes held for several seconds) on pitch.

For some, singing vibrato comes naturally. But if it doesn’t come naturally for you, then don’t worry. It can be learned with some practice. The following exercise can help you get a feel for what vibrato feels like:

Place one or both hands on your stomach (just below your belly button).

While singing, gently press your hand against your belly a few times per second (3-4 times per second is a good place to start) so that you feel bursts of air hitting your throat. While doing this, you should be continuing to exhale–that is, keep your stomach moving inward.

Listen to how this pressing causes the sound to “pulse”.

Continue to practice this exercise until you can create the “pulsing” sound without the use of your hand.

When you first start this exercise, you may be able to add vibrato for only a part of the note being sung. Don’t worry, just keep practicing and using this technique until you develop right amount of coordination. When you feel more comfortable, try to increase the number of “pulses” per second to around 5-6.

We hope this is helpful. Feel free to let us know if it’s working or if you have vibrato singing tips to add.

If you are looking for Speech Level Singing teachers–as in “I want to take a real live Speech Level Singing vocal lesson”, one of the best places to start is the Speech Level Singing Teacher Search on the official Speech Level Singing website.

In our experience, face-to-face lessons have been invaluable. However, they can be expensive (ours was $60 for a half hour and that was supposedly cheap!). There are also teachers who are willing to provide lessons over the phone. Although that may not seem like a great idea, they can be effective with a good teacher. Check with any teacher you find if they provide phone lessons (sometimes at a reduced cost).

If you’re not quite ready for (or can’t afford) face-to-face lessons, consider starting with Seth Riggs’ (founder of the Speech Level Singing technique) book Singing For The Stars or exploring home-based lessons like Singing Success or the online version of it.

Vocal care for singers can sometimes be an overlooked topic–especially for singers who learn on their own or never receive quality instruction. It comes down to this: take care of your voice. We know from experience that not properly caring for our voice will actually hurt our progress (and potentially cause long-term damage).

Here are a few tips to remember in taking care of your voice:

Do not sing if your voice hurts. In our opinion, this is the number one rule for taking care of your voice. Singing when your voice hurts will not make it stronger. When your voice hurts, it usually means that the vocal folds are irritated. If you don’t back off, you can potentially develop blisters on your vocal cords. If left unchecked, these blisters can turn into callouses that lead to long-term, serious problems. Also, if your voice hurts or is sore after every time you sing, then you need to adjust your technique. Consider exploring techniques like the speech level singing technique, taking voice lessons, or home-based courses like Singing Success or its online version. There is no substitute for good technique.

Always, always, warm up. This would be our number two rule when it comes to vocal care. Warming up for singing is no different than an athlete warming up or stretching for a practice or performance. A proper warm-up gradually increases the amount of air flowing through the vocal cords so that everything is loose, relaxed, and there is minimal chance of causing irritation. Plus, it mentally gets you ready you for the upcoming practice or performance session.

Drink plenty of water throughout the day. If you are dehydrated, then the vocal folds will not be hydrated very well either. Note that it takes time for the water you drink to hydrate the vocal folds. Gulping down a glass of water and then singing five minutes later won’t be very effective. Consistency is the key.

Avoid caffeine and alcohol since they dehydrate the body (and subsequently the voice).

Take frequent breaks while rehearsing or practicing. Consider that it takes time to develop the coordination required to sing without strain for an extended period. Taking frequent breaks will help you to stay focused on technique and correct any bad habits that come up.

Get plenty of consistent rest/sleep. Like everything in life, the body and mind function the best when it has periods of proper rest.

Remember that vocal care is important and should be ongoing. We hope these tips help keep your voice healthy for a long time to come. Let us know if they’re helpful or if you have any other vocal care tips to share.

April 9, 2009
- Guy is a great speech level singing coach. Here he gives some good reasons on why developing vibrato are important. Note the reference to the debate over how my cycles per second vibrato should have. Ultimately, we think it’s best to experiment with what sounds “right”.

There seems to be competing views on what are considered proper breathing techniques for singing. For example, we’ve seen some teachers say things like “sing from the diaphragm” and then other teachers say “you can’t actually sing from your diaphragm, that’s a myth”. So instead of taking sides and arguing about whether a technique is right or wrong, we’re going to simply share what has worked for us.

First, we do think breathing (often referred to as “breath support”) is important and should be addressed; however, we’ve found that it’s more effective to pay attention to the sensations around our vocal cords when first learning. That being said, here are a few breathing techniques for singing:

Breathe using your stomach. On inhales, pretend that your are filling your stomach with air. This will have the effect of your navel (belly button) moving outward. On exhales, bring your stomach inward (think about bringing your navel in towards your spine). As you are singing, always keep your stomach moving in so that there is a constant flow or air to the vocal cords. If you stop or hold your breath, then you may inadvertently cause the outer muscles of your larynx (voice box) to tense up.

Always breathe in a relaxed manner and keep your chest comfortably open. Poor posture or slouching makes it more difficult to move air in and out of the lungs.

Breathe through your nose during when inhaling so there is less chance of your mouth and throat getting dry.

Refrain from “getting louder” if you are having difficulty hitting higher notes in your range. You actually need less air as you get higher in pitch. Keeping this in mind will help you automatically regulate the amount of air you need.

Let us know if these tidbits are helpful or if you have some additional ones to add.

Over time, we’re going to be sharing several tips we’ve learned to help you make immediate improvements in your voice. We’ll start with some of the most useful.

The first is one of our favorites because it’s easy and also a good way to warm up your voice. Here’s how it goes:

Using both hands, place three fingers in the middle of each cheek.

Gently push on your cheeks until you can lightly feel where your teeth come together. This will make your lips “pucker up” a bit (we sometimes refer to it as “fish lips”).

To make sure everything is set up properly, hum a few notes while letting your lips lightly flap together to make a “bubble-like” sound.

Begin to hum your favorite song while keeping your fingers on your cheeks and your lips puckered. You won’t be able to actually sing any words, but the result will be the sound coming through your lips while they are flapping against each other.

Maintain this flapping sound and sensation throughout the song. If your lips come apart to the point where the flapping sound stops, then you are forcing too much air out. When this happens, relax your lips and jaw, then try again–this time trying not to let your lips come apart.

One of the points of this exercise is to reduce the amount of air passing through the vocal cords so that you can begin to feel what it’s like for the vocal cords to be working without any extra help from the muscles outside of the larynx. You may notice that it’s hard to keep your lips together when trying to hit certain notes. It’s perfectly okay–especially in the beginning. Just remember to relax, use less air, and try again.

This tip is especially useful when learning a new song, and, as we mentioned before, a good way to warm up your voice. As an FYI, this exercise is often referred to as “lip trills”. We hope it helps. Be sure to let us know (please leave a comment) if you find it useful.

If you want to learn how to sing better, the speech level singing technique is by far the most effective method of singing we’ve found. In fact, the several years of lessons we took were based on this method and much of what we’ll talk about on this site has been influenced by it.

So what exactly is the speech level singing technique?

In essence, speech level singing is based on keeping the larynx (also known as the voice box) in a comfortable, stable position throughout the vocal range. For example, if you gently place your fingers on the outside of your Adam’s apple or observe it in a mirror, you will notice that it stays relatively stable while speaking in a normal voice. However, when you either yawn or swallow, it will lower or rise respectively.

When singing (without proper technique), there can be a tendency for the larynx to rise (like when swallowing) that causes the muscles outside of the larynx to restrict the movement of the vocal cords. This can ultimately lead to poor sound, straining, and even the inability to hit certain notes.

The technique addresses the “moving” larynx problem, teaches a natural method of breathing while singing, and yields (with practice, of course) a flexible, strain-free voice.

Speech Level Singing was developed by Seth Riggs (see Singing For The Stars) and has been claimed to have been used by more than 120 Grammy winners (source: Speech Level Singing International).

Voice lessons with a Certified Speech Level Singing teacher are extremely beneficial (we know, we’ve had some); however, there are plenty of resources, books, and programs that are, in our opinion, based on this technique and can provide great benefit for much less than traditional lessons.

First, welcome to How To Sing Better (Now). Glad you found us. This blog is run by a couple of sing-a-holics looking to connect with like-minded sing-a-holics and share what we’ve found during our experience of learning to sing better over the past few years. Whether you are a professional singer or just someone who wants to sound better in the shower, we hope you find something useful.

Second, the name of the blog may seem a little misleading. You may think that the “now” part means there is a quick fix to become a better singer.

But in this case, it doesn’t.

Learning to sing better, like learning any other skill in life, takes practice. There are no shortcuts.

What we mean by “now” is this: When we are singing–whether in practice or performance–the time is always now. There should be no worrying about homework, bills, chores, jobs, what other people think of our singing, or, more importantly, what we think of our own singing. Just us committed to expressing ourselves in that moment.

We look forward to sharing resources, techniques, and exercises for improving the quality of your voice and for helping you express yourself fully.

Again, welcome and thanks for stopping by.
